Brighton and Hove Albion defeated Manchester City 1-0 on Saturday.
The result gave the Seagulls their second consecutive league win over the champions and moved them within two points of the top of the Premier League table.
Yasin Ayari scored the only goal in the 11th minute to give Brighton a lead. Goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen made key saves in the second half to stop Manchester City from equalizing.
This was Brighton’s first victory away at the Etihad Stadium in 18 attempts. Manager Fabian Hurzeler’s team avenged a penalty shootout loss to City in the League Cup earlier that week. Brighton had also defeated Arsenal earlier in the season, proving they can beat top teams.
Manchester City had won their first seven league matches under new manager Enzo Maresca. This loss snaps that streak. The 10-time champions are currently dealing with an appeal against a guilty verdict on more than 100 charges of breaking financial rules. If the verdict stands, they face a points deduction and possible relegation.
Arsenal can move to the top of the standings if they do not lose to Liverpool on Sunday.
