Hackers drain $6 billion from Binance in 20-minute raid
Binance promised to cover customer losses after researchers linked the theft to North Korean state actors.

Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange, lost more than $6 billion in digital assets to hackers on Thursday afternoon. The theft, which researchers described as the largest cyber heist in history, was executed in approximately 20 minutes. The funds were siphoned from trading accounts held by both institutional investors and individual users.
Ari Redbord, global head of policy at TRM Labs, characterized the event as a historic breach of financial security. "What happened last night is the largest bank robbery in human history," Redbord stated. He noted that the perpetrators moved the stolen assets at the speed of the internet after bypassing multiple security layers.
Researchers from TRM Labs and other firms identified North Korea as the likely source of the attack. Redbord attributed the decision to the country's established history of sophisticated cyber operations. He explained that the operation was conducted by professional hacker teams embedded within the North Korean military, rather than independent commercial actors. "This is going to be used for weapons proliferation and other destabilizing activity," Redbord said.
Binance has pledged to fully reimburse customers who suffered losses during the raid. The company is currently working with other exchanges to trace the stolen assets. So far, Binance has frozen approximately $3 billion in funds that were moved out of the platform. Cryptocurrencies are traceable on public ledgers, allowing investigators to follow the movement of the digital currency as it changes hands.
The recovery effort is described as a race between investigators and the attackers. Hackers attempt to consolidate the stolen coins into their own accounts to gain full control, while researchers work to intercept those transactions. Not all of the missing funds may be recoverable, but the initial freeze represents a substantial portion of the total loss.
The incident raises questions about the regulatory environment surrounding crypto exchanges. Unlike traditional stock markets, exchanges like Binance operate in a less strictly regulated space. The company previously pleaded guilty to anti-money laundering violations in 2023 and paid over $4 billion in penalties. Because detailed customer data is not publicly available, it is not yet possible to determine exactly which accounts were impacted.
Binance continues to coordinate with partners to track the remaining assets. The company maintains that it will make affected customers whole despite the initial magnitude of the theft.
