The Greer Soup Kitchen accepted a $2,000 check on Thursday from FOX Carolina's Surprise Squad and United Community. The cash arrives as the non-profit organization prepares for its busiest season of the year.
Executive Director Martha Bennett stated that the need for food assistance is at a high point. The kitchen operates every day of the year and currently serves more than 100 individuals daily. Many of those guests are unsheltered.
Bennett noted that the facility does not receive state or federal funding. It depends entirely on contributions from local families, churches, and businesses to feed up to 150 people per day. She reported that recent donations have decreased.
“We’re feeding every day. So those needs are mighty. But it’s all given to us through donations or people throughout Greer and the Upstate, and donations right now are down. We need them big time to keep us going,” Bennett said.
The $2,000 gift will pay for meals during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. Bennett calculated that the sum is enough to feed 2,000 people. She said the check helps ensure no guest is turned away during the festive months.
“Thank you guys so much. This is wonderful news. This helps a lot. This will feed 2,000 people. Really,” Bennett said upon receiving the funds.
Michelle Seaver from United Community described the partnership as a personal connection to the community. She said the team was moved by the story of the kitchen's long-term service. “Everything we heard about Martha and this soup kitchen was just so inspiring, and we just love the idea that we can be a part of it and be a part of her story and help so many people that are in need this holiday season,” Seaver said.
