Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is asking Israeli voters to believe that the country faces a second Holocaust if he loses power on Tuesday. His campaign released an AI-generated image of a nuclear explosion over Tel Aviv on Sunday, a visual that anchors the final days of the election.

The image accompanied a warning that Netanyahu’s defeat could leave Israel vulnerable to Iranian attack. The message moves beyond standard policy disagreements by linking the nation’s survival directly to one man’s continued tenure. Supporters view the move as a necessary signal of urgency. Critics call it an attempt to make the prime minister appear indispensable.

The core of the debate is trust. Netanyahu argues he is the only leader with the experience and international standing to confront the Iranian threat. The change bloc argues the opposite. They say he can no longer be trusted to separate national security needs from his own political survival.

This trust issue became more complicated on Sunday night when N12 News reported a confrontation between Netanyahu and IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir. According to the report, Zamir resisted an instruction for an undisclosed military operation. Defense officials reportedly feared the action could trigger a direct confrontation with Iran.

Zamir allegedly sought further deliberations and signed documentation regarding the legal authorization for the operation. Netanyahu denied any tension with the military’s top brass over Iran. However, the report gives opponents a specific example to challenge the prime minister’s claim of clear judgment.

The political significance is immediate. Netanyahu wants voters to question whether his rivals can handle Iran policy. The report invites voters to question whether the military trusts Netanyahu’s judgment. Before answering that, voters must decide if they believe the N12 account.

Some voters will see the report as evidence that military professionals are restraining a prime minister driven by politics. Others will view it as an anonymous story released at a damaging moment, similar to a previously contradicted report that Egyptian intelligence chief Abbas Kamel visited Israel to warn of an attack before October 7.

The shadow of October 7 makes these questions harder to answer. The military and intelligence establishments failed in their assessments and preparations on that day. This failure complicates the change bloc’s argument that military judgment deserves automatic deference. Conversely, Netanyahu bore ultimate political responsibility for security on October 7. His opponents argue that his tenure should be questioned just as much as the military’s. Voters on Tuesday are choosing between two sets of leaders whose credibility was shaken by the same disaster.
