The U.S. Marshals Service rescued a 10-year-old girl from a home in Oregon City on Wednesday afternoon. The child had been taken from her apartment in Canby earlier that morning. Authorities described the recovery as a tactical operation that resulted in the girl being found tied up inside a closet.
Investigators say a man entered the apartment at 1:39 a.m. He injured a 12-year-old child and took the 10-year-old. The older child was rushed to the hospital and remained under treatment as of Wednesday afternoon. The 10-year-old was also taken to a hospital after her rescue.
Vince Edgar Chavez was identified as the suspect. The U.S. Marshals stated he attempted to escape through the back of the house before his arrest. Police confirmed the parents are cooperating with the ongoing investigation. Officials did not release further details about the suspect's motive or relationship to the children.
Residents in Canby questioned why an Amber Alert was not issued immediately after the girl was taken. The Canby Police Department responded that it had not yet gathered the specific information required to activate such an alert. The department did not specify what additional data was missing or when that process was completed.
Carus Elementary, where the 10-year-old is a student, increased its police presence during Wednesday's afternoon dismissal. The school cited an abundance of caution for the decision. The school district told families that its staff were available to support students and families in any way needed.
The incident involved two children from the same household. The 12-year-old's injuries were described as part of the initial break-in and assault. Both children were treated at a local hospital. The suspect was in custody following his failed attempt to flee the residence.
