Three people were aboard a helicopter that crashed in Biscayne Bay on Wednesday morning. The U.S. Coast Guard confirmed that one person died in the accident. Two survivors were transported by EMS to a hospital for a higher level of care.
The Federal Aviation Administration identified the aircraft as a Robinson R44. The crash occurred at approximately 11:15 a.m. in the water east of Miami Executive Airport. The Coast Guard reported that partner agencies responded to the scene at roughly 11:30 a.m.
Miami Fire Rescue stated that the two men taken to the hospital are adults. Their ages and relationship to each other were not immediately known. Authorities have not released specific details about the third victim, who did not survive the crash.
Video from Chopper6 showed officials docked at No Name Harbor inside Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park in Key Biscayne. On the land, workers surrounded a yellow tarp that covered what was presumed to be a body.
FlightAware data indicates the helicopter recorded a sharp decline in altitude over the bay before the impact. The National Transportation Safety Board and the FAA will investigate the cause of the crash.
