President Donald Trump spoke to CBS News on election night to congratulate the Democratic Party. The call took place in Washington, D.C., where the president addressed the recent voting results.
"My message is, congratulations to the Democrats, and I look forward to working with you for the good of our country," Trump said. He stated that he knows many Democratic members of Congress. "I have total and I'm sure we'll be able to work things out," he added. Trump predicted that Democrats would want to cooperate with his administration. "Otherwise I'd just veto everything and they're not gonna want that," he said.
The president attributed Republican losses to his absence from the ballot. "I feel that I wasn't on the ballot, and there was nothing that could be done about that," Trump said. He claimed that a Republican victory would have been easy if his name had appeared on the tickets. "In some cases they didn't like the candidates, and in some cases those candidates were not my friend," he explained. He noted that the party base stayed home because of these internal dynamics.
When asked about his reaction to the results, Trump said he tried hard. "I tried to help people get elected, and they were not elected," he said. He described the outcome as a specific point in time that has occurred in the past. "The people didn't come out as they should have," he added.
The president also discussed the conflict with Iran. He said the war would end when he decides it should end. "It'll end when I say it ends," Trump said.
