Julian Lewis, the backup quarterback for the University of Colorado, is recovering in a hospital after a medical emergency at the school's athletic facility in Boulder. The incident occurred on Wednesday, according to his father, T. Carlton Lewis, who shared the news on social media on Thursday morning.
T. Carlton Lewis described his son as thankful to the medical team, teammates, and fans. He asked the public to respect the privacy of Lewis and his family. No further details about the specific medical condition or the circumstances of the emergency were released at the time of posting.
The university released a statement confirming the incident. Colorado said it extends full support to Lewis and his family. The statement noted that Lewis remains in the thoughts of every player, coach, and staff member. The school added that his health and well-being are the top priority during this period.
Teammates also reacted on social media. Wide receiver Joseph Williams posted that he was praying for Lewis. In a separate post, Williams addressed public scrutiny, stating that athletes' mental health matters and that people often judge without knowing what the team goes through.
Lewis is in his second year at Colorado. He opened the season as the starter before coach Deion Sanders moved the offense to Isaac Wilson. This season, Lewis has thrown for 733 yards and six touchdowns while intercepting the ball twice. He set a school record last month against Weber State by throwing four first-half touchdown passes and rushing for another.
The Buffaloes are scheduled to play Kansas State on Saturday.
