Gillette Stadium will not host the Massachusetts high school football championship games in December 2026. The venue cited scheduling constraints as the reason for the change, ending a two-decade tradition of hosting these final games.

The Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association announced the news on Monday. The group stated that it was informed late last week that the stadium was no longer available for the event. The MIAA said it would work to secure new host sites to ensure a good experience for student-athletes and school communities.

The scheduling conflict stems from the professional teams that call the stadium home. The New England Patriots are scheduled to play the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, December 6. Additionally, the New England Revolution have secured a spot in the MLS playoffs. The soccer team could host a postseason match on either December 2 or December 5.

These professional games require practice time on the field. If the Revolution host a playoff match, the involved teams must practice on the playing surface the day before the game. This logistics requirement makes it impossible to prepare the field for the high school championships within the MIAA's timeframe.

The MIAA typically plays its title games during the first week of December. It cannot host events later than that window. The overlap of the Patriots home game and the potential Revolution playoff dates creates the specific conflict that prevents the stadium from hosting the high school finals this year.

A spokesperson for Gillette Stadium said the Kraft family has been proud to donate the venue for these games for nearly twenty years. The statement noted that the logistics from the Revolution playoff schedule and the Patriots game on December 6 made hosting the state championships difficult this year. The spokesperson wished the schools and families the best of luck and expressed hope to host the event again in the future.
