The Portland Timbers secured a spot in the MLS postseason on Sunday night, climbing from 11th to eighth in the Western Conference standings after defeating the Houston Dynamo 3-1. The result leaves Portland with a 12-14-7 record and one match remaining in the regular season.

Vincent Janssen led the charge with one goal and two assists, while David Da Costa contributed one of each. Janssen’s performance included his first assist in 13 league matches and a career-high 10th assist off a corner kick. Da Costa scored his career-high seventh goal in the 25th minute, taking a pass from Janssen to open the scoring.

Portland extended its lead in the 65th minute when Kristoffer Velde found the net for his 11th goal of the season. The play was assisted by Janssen and Ariel Lassiter, with the latter’s seventh assist matching his career high. Houston pulled within one goal six minutes later when Agustín Bouzat scored his second goal of the year. Duncan McGuire provided his first assist in 19 appearances with the Dynamo, while defender Diadié Samassékou added his second assist of the season.

Janssen restored Portland’s two-goal advantage in the 78th minute, converting a corner-kick assist from Da Costa for his fourth goal of the campaign. Goalkeeper James Pantemis did not record a save for the Timbers, while Jonathan Bond stopped three shots for Houston, whose five-match unbeaten streak came to an end.

The victory marks the third straight win for Portland, which has beaten playoff contenders Charlotte FC, St. Louis City, and now Houston. The Timbers improved their home record to 9-4-4, while the Dynamo fell to 6-7-4 on the road. Houston retains a chance to finish in the top four and earn home-field advantage in the first round.

Both teams will conclude their regular seasons on Saturday. The Timbers will travel to face Austin FC, while the Dynamo will host St. Louis City. Houston previously defeated Portland 3-2 in a mid-Match meeting earlier this year.
