Pyotr Kochetkov stopped 26 shots on Sunday to keep his undefeated start going, giving Carolina fans their first taste of a historic goaltending streak. The Hurricanes goalie has now won his first 10 games of the season, a mark that places him in elite company within the league's 100-year history.
This achievement ties the record set by Carey Price with the Montreal Canadiens in 2016. Price also started his season 10-0, making Kochetkov the only third goaltender to reach this milestone. The only longer season-opening streak in NHL history belongs to Jack Campbell, who won 11 straight for the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2020-21.
The win on Sunday gave Carolina its fourth straight victory. Sean Walker scored two goals to lead the Hurricanes, while Sebastian Aho, Juuso Valimaki, Logan Stankoven, Mark Jankowski and Jesperi Kotkaniemi also found the back of the net. Stankoven, Seth Jarvis, Nikolaj Ehlers and Shayne Gostisbehere each recorded two assists in the rout.
The shutout marked Kochetkov's second of the season, bringing his career total to 13 in 135 games. He emerged as the clear standout on the ice, dominating the net against a Winnipeg team that has struggled significantly over the last week.
The Jets dropped their ninth straight game, falling to a 0-7-2 record over that span. Stuart Skinner made 12 saves before being pulled after allowing the fifth goal. Clay Stevenson finished the game in relief, stopping 13 shots for the visitors.
Elsewhere in the league, Connor McDavid continued his prolific start for the Edmonton Oilers. He extended his NHL record season-opening assists streak to 15 games and scored the first goal of the game with a quick tap-in. That goal gave him 418 career goals, moving him past Glenn Anderson for the fourth-most in franchise history.
McDavid also passed Mark Messier for the most first-minute goals in Oilers history. The captain now leads all scorers with 39 points and is pacing toward the 200-point mark. In other results, the Philadelphia Flyers snapped a winless streak by beating Utah 6-3, while Anaheim overcame a three-goal deficit to top Ottawa 6-3.
