Grover Stewart now shoulders the primary leadership burden on the Indianapolis Colts defense. He has shared the defensive line with DeForest Buckner for the last seven seasons, but the two are no longer teammates. The Colts sent Buckner to the San Francisco 49ers on Thursday. In return, Indianapolis received a fourth-round pick in the 2027 NFL Draft.
Stewart described the separation as personal. He called Buckner a best friend and a brother. Stewart noted that the bond formed over seven years in Indianapolis was a lifetime connection. He stated that watching his close friend return to the team that originally drafted him was emotionally difficult.
Buckner served as a team captain during every season with the Colts. He was known for his vocal presence in the locker room. Stewart said he must now uphold the standards Buckner set. He plans to guide the younger players on the roster.
Stewart acknowledged the impact of losing such a prominent leader. He said he will continue to perform his duties and direct the locker room. He emphasized that he remains focused on his role despite the personnel changes.
The Colts are undergoing a major roster reorganization. General manager Chris Ballard was recently fired. Longtime offensive guard Quenton Nelson was traded to Seattle. Stewart is in the final year of a three-year contract worth $39 million. He signed that deal with Indianapolis in March 2024.
Stewart said he will not flinch amid the trade rumors. He intends to stick to his job. He said he will address his own future status after the season ends. The trade deadline is scheduled for Tuesday, November 10 at 4 p.m.
The Colts, who hold a 2-5 record, will play the 4-2 Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday, November 1.
