Greenville police ruled the death of actress Hayden Panettiere accidental on Wednesday, officially closing their investigation into the August 16 incident. The department stated that its findings aligned with the medical examiner's determination regarding the cause of death.

Panettiere, 36, was found unresponsive at a residence in Greenville on August 16. Emergency crews treated her for cardiac arrest but pronounced her dead at the scene. A post-mortem examination revealed no physical trauma contributed to the outcome.

The coroner's report identified the cause of death as the toxic effects of five substances: fentanyl, 4-ANPP, alprazolam, methocarbamol, and quetiapine. Alprazolam is the generic name for Xanax, a muscle relaxant, and quetiapine is used to treat certain mental health conditions.

A police spokesperson confirmed the final ruling in a statement. "Based on the Medical Examiner’s determination and the findings of the investigation, Hayden Panettiere’s death has been ruled accidental," the spokesperson said. The department added that it had concluded its inquiry.

The Drug Enforcement Administration reportedly participated in the case, though it is unclear if its own review is complete. According to a police report from the day of her death, former boyfriend Brian Hickerson and his brother Zack were present at the residence when emergency services arrived.

Panettiere was known for roles as Claire Bennet in Heroes and Juliette Barnes in Nashville. She also appeared in the Scream film franchise. She had previously spoken publicly about her struggles with substance abuse, depression, and postpartum depression.
