Residents of Salina will get the rally they thought they had lost. The Republican National Committee confirmed that President Donald Trump will appear Sunday at Salina Regional Airport, returning to the Hangar 509 site where the event had been scheduled for Saturday before plans changed.
Doors open at 3:30 p.m., the rally begins at 5:30 p.m., and Trump is expected to speak at 7 p.m. Anyone who reserved tickets for the original Saturday time slot must sign up again to hold a spot for Sunday. The RNC has said Trump will also hold a rally in Iowa, with the two events set for back-to-back dates.
The rally serves as a final push for incumbent Republican Senator Roger Marshall, who faces Democratic candidate Adam Hamilton. The RNC noted that some polls show Hamilton ahead by a few points in the contest for the U.S. Senate seat.
The RNC first canceled the Kansas and Iowa rallies on Thursday, announcing at that time that Trump would instead hold tele-rallies to reach more voters. A person familiar with the latest plans said the Iowa and Kansas events were rearranged to accommodate tele-rallies added to Trump's schedule.
Salina residents described a mix of relief and frustration at the reversal. Tomas Perez said the sequence of events felt like a roller coaster, with excitement building, then the cancellation, then the return. "I think it's pretty cool that we got a standing president coming to Salina, Kansas," said Anita Popelka, a Salina resident. Brian Berneking said some lingering frustration over the initial cancellation may remain, but he expects supporters to outnumber any protesters. Perez said he expects both supporters and protesters to appear, adding that Salina "goes both ways." He was checking his schedule to see whether he could attend.
