James Gunn has confirmed that the 2021 film The Suicide Squad is part of the official DC Universe canon.

During a recent podcast episode, Gunn stated that the movie is "within the canon of the DCU" and that the decision is final. He noted that while most of the film carries over, one element remains in flux: the future of the character Harley Quinn.

Gunn said he wants "a little leeway with this by the fans" because he is unsure how the character's storyline will develop. He added that he believes the rest of the film presents no problems for the rebooted universe.

The host was joined by Jennifer Holland and Steve Agee, who starred in the film. The group discussed which parts of the pre-reboot era persist. They addressed several dead characters and actors who have played multiple DC roles, including Sean Gunn, Nathan Fillion, and Michael Rooker.

Gunn acknowledged that Margot Robbie, who has portrayed Harley Quinn in three live-action films, might not return to the part. He described Robbie as "kind of the biggest female star in the world" and suggested she may be "over that" role.

Robbie debuted as the character in David Ayer's 2016 Suicide Squad. She appeared again in 2020's Birds of Prey before joining Gunn's 2021 sequel. Since then, she has starred in Barbie and Emerald Fennell's Wuthering Heights. She is scheduled to appear in Tim Burton's Attack of the Fifty Foot Woman next.

Gunn expressed his love for Robbie as Harley Quinn but admitted he does not know if she wants to play the character again. He indicated that her current schedule might be too full to revisit the role at this time.
