At least six people died and dozens more were wounded in a series of shootings that struck nightlife districts across the United States over the Halloween weekend, according to local officials.
The heaviest toll fell on Dallas, where four people were killed and 15 others injured in the Deep Ellum neighborhood. Police described the area, known for its music venues and restaurants, as the site of multiple distinct incidents.
The violence unfolded across a 90-minute window on Saturday night. Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux said investigators were working to determine if the three separate shootings were connected. He noted that the department had increased its police presence in the district prior to the events. No officers were hurt in the incidents.
“This is a really big scene. It's spread out,” Comeaux said. The chief confirmed that arrests were made but did not specify the number of suspects or the charges filed against them.
In Birmingham, Alabama, the deadliest incident outside of Dallas occurred near Legion Field. Mayor Randall Woodfin stated that one person was killed and eight others were wounded in two separate shootings following the annual Magic City Classic football game on Saturday night. Alabama A&M defeated Alabama State 31-28 before a crowd of nearly 70,000.
Birmingham Police Chief Michael Pickett said most spectators had left the stadium property when the gunfire started. The first shooting took place near vendors set up along Graymont Avenue. Fire officials reported that two victims were in critical condition as of Sunday. Police spokesperson De'Rell Freeman said one person was detained and that multiple weapons were recovered from the scene.
Newark, Delaware, also saw significant violence. Lieutenant Greg D’Elia of the Newark Police Department said six people were shot late Saturday near the University of Delaware campus. All six were transported to hospitals, and their conditions were not immediately released. Main Street in the city was closed for several hours following the incident.
In Bloomington, Illinois, a shooting near the Illinois Wesleyan University campus early Sunday resulted in the death of a 19-year-old woman. Another woman was left in critical condition, while six others sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Bloomington is located approximately 135 miles southwest of Chicago.
Fayetteville, Arkansas, reported a shooting early Sunday near the University of Arkansas. Six people were taken to hospitals with gunshot wounds. Police said in a news release that no arrests had been made and that a preliminary investigation indicated an altercation preceded the gunfire.
Two separate attacks occurred at Spirit Halloween stores on Friday. In Fairfield, California, a 31-year-old pregnant woman was killed in what police described as a targeted attack inside the store. Six other people were wounded. In Madison Heights, Michigan, a 21-year-old man was fatally shot Friday afternoon. A man assaulted by bystanders while being taken into custody was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
