Aaron Ford, the current attorney general of Nevada, has defeated incumbent Republican Gov. Joe Lombardo in the state’s gubernatorial race, according to an NBC News projection. Ford’s victory makes him the first Black governor in Nevada’s history. The result returns the executive office to Democratic control after Lombardo captured the seat in 2022.

Ford’s campaign centered on economic anxieties among voters. He and his team linked Lombardo to President Donald Trump, urging electors to judge both Republicans based on their handling of the national economy. Campaign materials frequently referenced the “Lombardo-Trump economy,” citing rising costs for goods, gasoline, housing, and health care as primary drivers of voter dissatisfaction.

The Democratic ticket targeted specific federal policies and state agreements. Ford’s supporters warned that Trump’s 2025 legislation, which combined tax cuts with spending measures, would disproportionately hurt low-income Nevadans. They also highlighted the impact of federal tariffs on Nevada’s tourism-dependent economy. A key point of contention was an agreement Lombardo reached with the Trump administration this summer, which facilitates the development of additional data centers on public land.

Ford’s strategy mirrored the approach Lombardo used to defeat Democratic Gov. Steve Sisolak four years prior. In that previous contest, Lombardo leveraged economic frustration to tie Sisolak to federal policies. This time, the roles reversed, with Ford employing a similar narrative against the incumbent.

Lombardo attempted to balance his alignment with Trump against local concerns. He accompanied the president to Nevada this summer and supported measures such as tax reductions on tips. However, Lombardo also opposed several of Trump’s 2025 tariffs and stressed differences on issues like solar power. The governor positioned himself as a figure working to lower living costs while distancing himself from federal decisions he described as things he “I can’t control.”

Lombardo also utilized his law enforcement background to argue that Democrats were soft on crime. Despite these efforts, the messages did not secure a second term in a state known for its competitive politics. With this defeat, both of Nevada’s most recent governors have failed to win re-election.

Ford’s win provides a strategic boost to Democrats ahead of the next presidential election. It reverses the Republican momentum built on Lombardo’s 2022 victory and Trump’s win in the state in 2024. Nevada remains a notable battleground, having been a site where Trump allies prepared alternate elector slates to challenge Joe Biden’s 2020 presidential victory.
