Air Serbia will begin nonstop flights to Belgrade on May 20, 2027, marking the carrier’s third destination in the United States. American Airlines will also start service to Barcelona, Venezuela, on Jan. 15, 2027. These two new routes are part of a wider push by Miami International Airport to add international and domestic flights across Europe, South America, Africa, and the Middle East.

Ralph Cutié, the airport’s director and CEO, said MIA’s air service development team spent about five years securing the Belgrade route. He noted that the airline had been working closely with Air Serbia for quite some time. “The Air Serbia news was really big news for us because our team has been working very hard with the Air Serbia folks for quite some time, and we were finally able to make it happen,” Cutié said.

American Airlines resumed flights to Caracas and Maracaibo earlier this year. The carrier also added flights from Miami to Jackson, Mississippi, and Bimini, Bahamas, and returned to Milan, Italy. Other airlines have joined the expansion trend. Icelandair, Aer Lingus, and SAS returned with seasonal flights to Iceland, Ireland, and Denmark in October.

Recent schedule changes include American Airlines resuming daily nonstop flights to Cap-Haïtien, Haiti, on Nov. 1. This destination became the airline’s 100th in the Caribbean and Latin America. Porter Airlines plans to resume seasonal flights to Ottawa, Canada, in November. United Airlines will launch nonstop service to Cleveland on Dec. 3.

MIA continues working with major carriers, including American Airlines and Delta Air Lines, to identify additional domestic routes. The airport is also exploring service to Asunción, Paraguay; Brussels, Belgium; Vienna, Austria; and New Delhi, India. Potential routes are under consideration in Saudi Arabia, Ethiopia, Kenya, and South Africa.

The airport is seeking nonstop flights to Tokyo and exploring cargo opportunities with Singapore. A shortage of long-range aircraft remains a challenge for these long-haul plans. MIA is monitoring instability in the Middle East as it considers potential service to Saudi Arabia.

Served by 92 airlines, MIA ranks second in the U.S. for international passenger traffic. The airport has surpassed 55 million annual passengers for two consecutive years. Long-term projections call for approximately 77 million passengers and more than 5 million tons of cargo annually by 2040. Cutié said the airport is pushing more international service to remain the gateway to the Americas.
